Señor Salsa : Burritos

Senor Salsa

After a long day of snowboarding in Southern MA and a long-ish drive home, and a snow storm, we drove into a little Mexican food restaurant in my hometown of Fairfield, CT. I (Christine) have eaten at this place a bunch of times before, throughout high school and college and the food has always been good. The two items we ordered the night of this snow storm were perfect fillers for an empty stomach coming from the slopes. El Champion and The Californian (with steak), two very hearty burritos. We immediately noticed the size of these burritos, and considering the price it was much more than expected. We compared it to Chipotle, the ingredients tasted more fresh, a simplistic recipe, just well cooked lightly seasoned ingredients put together to make a very tasty and even more filling take on the always satisfying burrito. ALSO! a small bag of tortilla chips also comes with your order, which you also have the choice of various kinds of salsa, that you can grab yourself at the end of the counter. So If you ever find yourself on your way back from a 6 hour snowboarding trip, with only a small cup of chilli or a burger in your belly, not to mention the hour and a half drives back and forth, the drive back being in a snowstorm… this is a pretty good way to cap off the day.

Rhong Tiam Thai : Thai Seelew Noodle, with chicken

A_M_Rhong_Tiam

Two people could split this dish, but if you know that you are hungry, then I would go with one a person for the Seelew Noodle. You have the option to order it with chicken, beef, pork, or vegetarian. This delicious soft flat noodle comes in a tasty Thai sauce that is not spicy, but they do have other dishes which are spicy if you enjoy that sort of thing. The sauce was more on the sweet side. It was a bit nutty (my best Austin Powers accent),  like most Thai food does, but not overwhelming. There is an assortment of mixed vegetables and a slice of lime for topping off your dish with. I wouldn’t go too crazy with the lime because it will overpower the other tastes of the dish, and you will miss out on the great Thai peanut flavor.

For Drinks, they have imported Thai Cocoanuts, which taste so fresh and sweet that it is unbelievable and we keep going back for more; especially refreshing in the summer time. Some time that we have gone there, they had sold out of the cocoanuts because they are so popular. They do have an assortment of other fruits to be sold, displayed in the front of the store in a glass refrigerator, as well as other American drinks.

You can order for dining in or dining out. It is a small dining area, but usually when we go, we always find a seat.

Omelette

A hearty omelette ordered with steak, gruyere, red peppers and tomatoes. There was a good ratio of fresh veggies and eggs, and tasty cheese. There was a side of home fries that were too smoky for my liking, however some other people may like it. The meal leaves you feeling full in a healthy way. No greasy feelings. I would definitely order this again!

Tea

Hot and iced
Very good and refreshing unsweetened iced tea. They do have sugar packets if you would like your beverage more sweet. Served in a cute little mason jar for the iced tea. (Christine)

Biscuits & Gravy
With homefries and your choice of of bacon,
sausage, canadian bacon or veggie sausage.

Very satisfying meal, the flavors got better and better with each bite. A very simple and rustic dish, however, not at all boring. I chose the addition of sausage and two over easy eggs; I thought they went great with the meal. The gravy was rich and bursting with flavor, not overpowering and doesn’t become tiresome; its enjoyable from the first to the last bite. In addition, the gravy had a great consistency, very creamy. As for the biscuits, they had a nice and fluffy interior, and flaky and crispy exterior. Overall it was one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling meals I’ve had, the gravy being the star of the dish. P.S. be sure to have an appetite when ordering this, its a very generous serving.

Chicken fingers

Although quite a common dish for most restaurants, theres no reason to ignore the classics. The chicken was well cooked, very juicy, not at all dry. In addition, you’re definitely biting into quality chicken breast and not some substitute. The batter tasted fresh, certainly was cooked on the spot and not something that was pre-cooked and heated to serve. Furthermore, it was one of the most crispy, well seasoned chicken fingers out there. They are served with dipping sauces: ketchup, mustard, and BBQ. All were very good, with the exception of the mustard, which had an odd aftertaste, somewhat spicy. Perhaps others will enjoy it the mustard, but all will enjoy the chicken fingers.
Crispy fried chicken fingers. They tasted freshly battered and fried. They did not taste frozen and fried.

Artichoke dip
Perhaps our only disappointment, It was ok, it wasn’t what we had expected because there was no cheese. it was very bland, hardly any flavor, but if that is what you expect with straight up blended artichoke dip, then dig right in. The bread was very good, fresh tasting, Italian bread.

Wild Rice : Pan Fried Noodle

Pan Fried Noodle

This is a dish that I keep coming back to. It used to be made with a thinner noodle. You will have to ask for the pan fried noodles (egg noodles) with chicken and vegetables, because it may not be on the menu anymore. It is still an awesome dish. There is a great variety of vegetables mixed with the sauce that they use, almost like a teriyaki sauce, which compliments the juicy chicken in the dish as well as shrimp. I am not a shrimp person so I give it to whomever else is at the table. But I am sure you could ask for no shrimp or no chicken, depending on who you are.  The noodles are crunchy because they have been pan fried, but if it sits in the sauce long enough it will become soft, but the meal is good at any stage.

The Chocolate Room : Banana Split

The Chocolate Room
Banana split
Amazing! The banana had been cut in half heated with sugar, leaving the flat side of the banana crunchy and sweet. It contrasted nicely with the smooth ice cream (Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry). Topped with whipped cream, which was very enjoyable, coming from someone who isn’t fond of whipped cream (christine) and served with a drizzle of chocolate syrup. (Cesar) had also enjoyed it very much, a guy who isn’t too fond of sweets.

Vapiano : Ravioli Con Carne

A_M_Vapianos_Ravioli

Vapiano

Ravioli Con Carne
(ravioli with bolognese filling, fresh vegetables, creamy tomato sauce)
This was a mix of a some good and some bad. The raviolis used were the frozen kind, which resulted in a taste you would expect… kinda bland and hard around the edges, perhaps they weren’t cooked well enough. However, on the plus side the meat sauce in the ravioli was rather tasty and the ravioli sauce was very nice and the best part of the meal. The sauce was rich and slightly creamy, a good consistency that didn’t feel too watery and was probably what saved the dish.
I would say stay away from the Ravioli dish, but if you like this sort of blended sauce, go for a noodle such as campanelle, which is fun, I have had this before in other dishes. You could add some sausage to this or ask for a pink bolognese sauce, they might be able to do that for you. That will be the next thing I try at Vapianos.

Vapiano : Pasta Rusticana

Pasta Rusticana
A very nice, simple and light (in terms of overwhelming tastes) pasta. I opted to try something new this night… and being a fan of simplicity (in general) the title Pasta Rusticana  caught my eye. The sauce seemed to be a mixture of white wine and olive oil, seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic and oregano (bare in mind I’m not a pro critique, so I’m going on what is visible and pops out in taste). Overall a very humble sauce, pleasant and with faint flavors coming forth. It was quite nice, a soft experience where nothing is bombarding the taste buds. As for the pasta it was well cooked nothing to complain about the texture is was cooked right. And the pork much like the pasta well prepared, not chewy or overcooked, it was soft and complemented the dish pretty well. If there was something I didn’t care for about the meal, it was the sauce being a bit watery and sat at the bottom of the dish so I constantly dig to the bottom to dip the pasta or pork. However, that was my first experience with pasta rusticana, perhaps that’s how its done.

Super Duper Weenie : Onions and Cheese

Super_Duper_Weenie_Onions_Chz

The Super Duper Weenie

Onions and Cheese

The Super Duper Weenie grills their hot dogs so they are plump and juicy on the inside and nice and crispy on the outside. This picture is just a simple dog that I had for dinner tonight, raw onion and American cheese. They usually have their own signature creations such as the California dog, which I usually get. It’s topped off with their homemade chili, which is slightly spicy, but very enjoyable. To those of you who aren’t too fond of chili, be careful because this stuff is addicting. It is not your ordinary chili. They have amazing fries and hamburgers as well.
